Five Elements in BaZi (五行)

Definition

Five Elements (五行, wǔxíng) in BaZi are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water: phases of Qi (气, qì) used to describe generation (生, shēng) and control (克, kè) among stems and branches. They are not chemistry labels; they are a relational language for chart balance relative to the Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ).

Generation and control as a pair

Generation (生) answers “what feeds what?” Control (克) answers “what shapes or limits what?” In readings, Resource elements generate the Day Master; Wealth elements are what the Day Master controls; Officer elements control the Day Master; Output elements are what the Day Master generates. Those plain-English roles become formal Ten God names after polarity is applied.

Seasonal climate (Month pillar)

Element counting is not only “how many Water characters appear.” The Month branch sets seasonal climate: a Water Day Master born in winter may read differently from the same stem in summer. Always read elements with the Month pillar in view, as taught on How to read a BaZi chart.

Worked example (illustrative)

For a Yang Metal (庚, gēng) Day Master, Water generates Metal (Resource line), Metal peers match Metal (Peer line), Wood is controlled by Metal (Wealth line), Fire controls Metal (Officer line), and Metal generates Water (Output line toward Water). Polarity decides which Ten God name applies to each stem you see on the chart.

Elements and Day Master

Once you know your Day Master, elemental talk becomes comparative: what feeds you, what you produce, what you control, and what pressures you. Those relationships becomeTen Gods when polarity is included.

Balance over slogans

“More Water is always better” is not a BaZi rule. Helpful imbalance depends on the Day Master’s season and the rest of the pillars. Use elements as a map, then let the app handle daily Qi application.

FAQ

What is the generation cycle?

Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water (condensation/refine), Water nourishes Wood. It describes support and production lines in the chart.

What is the control cycle?

Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water cools Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. Control can be useful discipline or excessive pressure depending on chart needs.

Is missing an element bad?

Not automatically. Some charts function well with an element absent from visible stems; others compensate through branches or luck cycles. Context and Day Master season matter more than a simple count.

How do elements connect to Ten Gods?

Once you know the Day Master element and polarity, other stems map to Ten Gods by element relationship plus yin/yang sameness or difference. See the Ten Gods guide.

Are Five Elements the same as Western elements?

BaZi uses five phases with generation and control rules. Western astrology uses four elements in a different symbolic system. Compare with care on the BaZi vs Western astrology page.

BaZi is a traditional Chinese metaphysics system shared here for cultural education and self-reflection. It is not medical, legal, or financial advice.
