What Is BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?
Definition
BaZi (八字, bāzì), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理, sìzhù mìnglǐ), is a traditional Chinese system that maps a birth moment into four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem (天干, tiāngān) with an Earthly Branch (地支, dìzhī). Together they form an elemental profile for self-understanding and timing, not a single zodiac animal label.
Beyond the Chinese zodiac year animal
Popular Chinese zodiac content focuses on the Year branch animal. BaZi keeps that Year pillar, then adds Month, Day, and Hour. The Day stem is the Day Master(日主, rìzhǔ), the chart’s self-reference when you weigh supportive and challenging elements.
Think of the year animal as a headline and the four pillars as the article. Two people born in the same zodiac year can share a Year branch yet differ on Month season, Day Master element, and Hour coloring.

The four pillars
Classical charts are read top to bottom or left to right as four stem-over-branch pairs. The eight characters (八字) are the raw data; interpretation adds elements, Ten Gods, and luck cycles.
| Pillar | Chinese | Pinyin | Common focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year | 年柱 | niánzhù | Ancestry, social backdrop, broader environment |
| Month | 月柱 | yuèzhù | Seasonal climate of the chart; career and outer structure cues |
| Day | 日柱 | rìzhù | Self and close partnership; Day stem is the Day Master |
| Hour | 时柱 | shízhù | Children, later life themes, inner output and legacy cues |
Example: what “four pillars” looks like in practice
A learner might see a chart summarized as Year: 甲子, Month: 丙寅, Day: 戊辰, Hour: 庚申 (illustrative only). The Day stem 戊 is the Day Master. Each pillar’s branch brings hidden stems and seasonal climate in fuller readings. You do not need to memorize every combination on day one; you need to know which pillar answers which question.
- Year: outer environment, family backdrop, the zodiac animal layer.
- Month: seasonal strength and “climate” for the Day Master.
- Day: self and close partnership themes via stem and branch.
- Hour: output, children, and later-life emphasis when time is reliable.
Stems, branches, and Five Elements
Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. Stems and branches carryFive Elements (五行, wǔxíng): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, plus yin/yang polarity. The full tables live onHeavenly Stems & Earthly Branches.
Elements are relational, not chemical. Wood “feeds” Fire in the generation cycle (生, shēng); Water “controls” Fire in the control cycle (克, kè). Those relationships become readable themes once the Day Master is fixed.
Methodology notes (educational)
- Month pillar follows solar terms (节气, jiéqì), not the civil calendar month alone.
- Year change in classical BaZi is commonly tied to 立春 (Lìchūn, Start of Spring), not only January 1 or Lunar New Year marketing dates.
- Day boundary often uses the Zi hour (子时) transition around 23:00–01:00, so late-night births need careful hour handling.
- True solar time may be considered for precise hour pillars. SeeTrue solar time in BaZi.
- Schools differ on edge cases (early Zi, year boundary, solar correction). Treat disagreements as methodology, not “wrong Chinese astrology.”

From chart structure to daily decisions
Once pillars are known, practitioners study elemental balance,Ten Gods (十神, shíshén), andLuck Pillars (大运, dàyùn). Structure answers what the chart contains; timing asks when themes intensify. The BaZi apps add Daily Qi, Dos/Don’ts, and an Oracle for decision framing while this site stays educational.

FAQ
What does BaZi literally mean?
BaZi means “eight characters” (八字). Each of the four pillars contributes two characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. That is why charts are often written as eight glyphs in two columns.
Is BaZi fortune-telling?
BaZi is a traditional metaphysics framework for reading structure and timing. On this site it is taught as cultural education and self-reflection, not medical, legal, or financial advice.
Where do I get my chart calculated?
This website explains BaZi; it does not run a web calculator. Use the BaZi mobile apps for charts, Daily Qi, and Oracle tools after you understand the vocabulary here.
How is BaZi different from my Chinese zodiac animal?
The year animal comes from one Earthly Branch on the Year pillar. BaZi adds Month, Day, and Hour pillars and centers interpretation on the Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ). See Chinese zodiac vs BaZi for a full comparison.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Day and Month pillars often work without a clock time, but the Hour pillar and some timing layers need it. Unknown or rounded times are a common reason hour readings disagree between apps.
