How to Read a BaZi Chart
Definition
Reading a BaZi chart means identifying the four pillars, naming the Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ), surveying Five Element (五行, wǔxíng) balance, then relating stems and branches through Ten Gods (十神, shíshén) and luck cycles. This guide explains the sequence in English. It does not calculate a chart for you.
What you need before reading
A usable chart starts with birth date, time, and location. Classical practice pays attention to solar terms for months, the 立春 (Lìchūn) year boundary, Zi-hour day boundaries, and sometimestrue solar time. If those sound new, readWhat is BaZi? first.
Write down whether your birth time came from a hospital record, family memory, or approximate window. Approximate times are fine for learning Month and Day themes; they are risky for Hour pillar certainty.
Step-by-step method
- Confirm birth data quality. Collect date, clock time, and place of birth. Note that month pillars follow solar terms, year change is often tied to Lichun, and hour pillars may need true solar time awareness.
- Lay out the Four Pillars. Write Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars as stem-over-branch pairs (eight characters total).
- Identify the Day Master. The Day stem is the Day Master (日主). Treat it as the self-reference for the rest of the reading.
- Map Five Elements. Count visible stem and branch elemental tendencies. Ask which elements support, exhaust, or control the Day Master.
- Read relationships via Ten Gods. Translate other stems relative to the Day Master into Ten Gods themes such as Wealth, Officer, Resource, Output, and Peer.
- Add timing with Luck Pillars. Consider decade Luck Pillars (大运) and annual influences for when themes intensify, then use the app for Daily Qi and decisions.
Pillar checklist
- Year pillar: environment and ancestral backdrop; also the popular zodiac animal layer.
- Month pillar: seasonal climate; often central to strength assessments.
- Day pillar: self and close partnership; Day stem =Day Master.
- Hour pillar: output, children themes, and later-life coloring (when time is known).
Mini example: reading logic without a full chart
Suppose your Day Master is Yang Earth (戊, wù) and your Month branch is Tiger (寅, yín), a Wood season. A beginner question is not “good or bad,” but “what is the climate?” Wood controls Earth in the control cycle, so the Month may feel demanding unless Resource or Peer elements appear elsewhere to balance the picture. That is elemental reasoning before Ten God names.
Next you would label other stems relative to 戊: Metal might read as Eating God or Hurting Officer depending on polarity. See Ten Gods once those comparisons feel mechanical.
Common beginner mistakes
- Treating the year animal as the whole chart instead of one branch in the Year pillar.
- Counting elements without anchoring on the Day Master first.
- Ignoring Month pillar season when judging “strong” or “weak” Day Master.
- Over-interpreting the Hour pillar when birth time is uncertain.
- Expecting one lucky element fix for every life area regardless of context.
How deep to go on your first pass
A first pass can stop after Day Master, Month climate, and a rough element tally. A second pass addsTen Gods on stems you can name confidently. A third pass layersLuck Pillars and annual pillars for timing vocabulary. Daily Qi in the app is most useful when this structural picture is already clear.
From structure to practice
Structure tells you what the chart contains. Practice asks what to do today. That is why BaZi apps emphasize Daily Qi, Dos/Don’ts, and the Oracle after the chart is clear, while this page stays a reading guide.

FAQ
Can I learn to read charts without calculating them myself?
Yes. Many learners study structure on educational sites and use trusted software for pillar generation. BaZi apps are designed for that split: theory on the web, pillars on the phone.
What if my birth time is unknown?
Hour pillar uncertainty affects the full picture. You can still study Year, Month, and Day themes cautiously, but avoid overconfident hour-based claims or child/output themes tied to the Hour pillar.
Is there a web calculator on this site?
No. chineseastrology.site stays educational. Charts and interactive tools live in the BaZi mobile apps.
What should I read first on the chart?
Day Master, then Month pillar season, then elemental balance across visible stems. Ten Gods and Luck Pillars come after that foundation is stable.
Why do two apps show different Hour pillars?
Common causes include true solar time settings, Zi-hour day-boundary rules, daylight saving handling, or rounded birth times. Compare settings against our true solar time and methodology notes on What is BaZi.
BaZi is a traditional Chinese metaphysics system shared here for cultural education and self-reflection. It is not medical, legal, or financial advice.
