Luck Pillars (大运, Da Yun)

Definition

Luck Pillars (大运, dàyùn), often called decade luck cycles, are sequential stem-branch periods that color a BaZi chart over roughly ten-year spans. They do not replace the natal Four Pillars (四柱, sìzhù); they show which themes tend to activate as life seasons change relative to the Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ).

Natal chart vs luck cycles

Your Four Pillars are the base map. Luck Pillars are moving weather. A Resource-heavy luck cycle may feel different for a strong Day Master than for a weak one. Context always includes Five Elements andTen Gods.

Natal pillars answer “what structure do I carry?” Luck Pillars ask “which stem-branch season am I walking through now?” Neither replaces the other.

How readers use Da Yun

  • Identify which decade you are in and which stem/branch is active.
  • Ask which Ten Gods that luck stem represents to your Day Master.
  • Notice clashes or combinations with natal branches (school-dependent rules).
  • Compare with annual pillars for finer timing, then use Daily Qi in the app for day-scale decisions.

Example narrative (illustrative)

Imagine a Yin Wood (乙) Day Master entering a Luck Pillar whose stem is Yang Metal (庚). Metal controls Wood in the element cycle, so Officer/Seven Killings themes may feel louder: structure, accountability, or external pressure. Whether that reads as career discipline or stress depends on natal balance, Month season, and the branch half of the luck pair. This is reasoning practice, not a universal headline.

Forward vs backward sequences

Classical calculation chooses whether luck advances forward or backward along the sexagenary cycle based on year stem polarity and gender conventions in many schools. You do not need to memorize the formula to learn the vocabulary: know that apps compute direction and start age from birth data and solar terms.

Methodology reminder

Luck sequences depend on sexagenary order and classical start-age rules tied to solar terms. This page teaches vocabulary; the BaZi apps compute cycles from birth data.

FAQ

Is a Luck Pillar a prediction of fate?

It is a timing language for emphasis and climate, used here for education and self-reflection, not deterministic medical, legal, or financial instruction.

How is starting luck age decided?

Classical methods use distance from birth to nearby solar-term boundaries and gender/yin-yang year conventions. Apps encode those rules; this site explains the concept.

How long does each Luck Pillar last?

Traditionally about ten years per pillar, though exact start/end dates are computed from birth data and school rules. Treat duration as approximate in conversation.

Do Luck Pillars change my Day Master?

No. The Day Master stays the natal Day stem. Luck Pillars add a moving stem-branch that interacts with natal pillars and Ten Gods.

How do annual pillars relate to Da Yun?

Annual pillars (流年) zoom in within the broader Luck Pillar decade. See Annual luck in BaZi for a full liú nián guide. Apps often show both; Daily Qi zooms further to the day scale.

BaZi is a traditional Chinese metaphysics system shared here for cultural education and self-reflection. It is not medical, legal, or financial advice.
