What Is Day Master (日主)?
Definition
Day Master (日主, rìzhǔ) is the Heavenly Stem (天干, tiāngān) of the Day pillar in a BaZi (八字, bāzì) chart: the self reference used to interpret the other stems, branches, and Five Elements (五行, wǔxíng). Knowing your Day Master is the first step beyond a year-animal zodiac label.
Why Day Master matters
Without a Day Master, elemental talk stays abstract. With it, you can ask: which elements support me, which drain me, and how do Ten Gods (十神, shíshén) relationships show up in work, money, and learning themes?
Day Master sits inside the broader BaZi / Four Pillars system. For a reading workflow, see How to read a BaZi chart.
Day Master vs year animal
The Chinese zodiac animal usually comes from the Year branch. Day Master comes from the Day stem. You can be a Horse year native with a Yin Water (癸) Day Master, or a Rat year native with Yang Fire (丙) Day Master. Compare layers on Chinese zodiac vs BaZi.
Strength and season (introductory)
Readers often ask whether a Day Master is “strong” or “weak” in the Month pillar’s season. Spring Wood supports Wood Day Masters differently than autumn Metal months. This hub names each stem; depth lives in individual stem guides and in Five Elements study.

FAQ
How do I find my Day Master?
Your Day Master is the stem on the Day pillar of your Four Pillars chart. This site explains the concept; the BaZi apps calculate the chart from birth details.
Are there ten Day Masters?
Yes. The ten Heavenly Stems (甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸) can each appear as Day Master. Browse them below for evergreen profiles.
Does Day Master equal personality forever?
Day Master is a reference point, not a full personality test. Season, surrounding pillars, Ten Gods, and Luck Pillars all modify how it expresses.
Is Yang stronger than Yin Day Master?
Polarity describes expressive style within the same element family, not a universal strong/weak ranking. Season and chart balance matter more than the yang/yin label alone.
Can two people share a Day Master and still differ?
Yes. Same Day stem with different Month, Year, Hour pillars and luck cycles can read quite differently. Always read the full four pillars.
