BaZi Compatibility (Four Pillars relationship reading)
Definition
BaZi compatibility (合盘 / relationship reading) studies how two Four Pillars charts interact—especially Day Masters (日主, rìzhǔ), Day branches, and Ten Gods (十神, shíshén) roles—rather than issuing a fake percentage score. It is a comparative language for dynamics and timing, used here for cultural education and self-reflection.
What “compatibility” means in Four Pillars
Searches for “bazi compatibility” or “four pillars compatibility” often expect a red/green match meter. Classical BaZi does not work that way. A useful reading compares two natal maps: how eachDay Master meets the other person’s stems and branches, whichTen Gods roles show up, and whether luck cycles amplify ease or friction.
Think dynamics, not destiny grades. Officer pressure can mean accountability in one decade and exhaustion in another. Peer stars can mean solidarity or rivalry depending on balance and season. Educational BaZi keeps those nuances instead of collapsing them into a fake score.
Start with Day Masters, not animals
Year-branch animals are a weak first filter. Two “Dragons” can still carry different Day Masters, Month seasons, and Hour pillars. Begin with each person’s Day stem—the self-reference—then ask what elemental relationship exists between those two stems usingFive Elements generation and control.
- Same element: peer-family themes (friendship, competition, shared pace).
- Generating link: support or output roles, depending on direction.
- Controlling link: structure, resource, or tension themes—context decides tone.
Day branches matter next. Many relationship discussions lean on the Day branch because it sits with the Day Master. Combinations, clashes, and harm patterns are school-dependent; learn the vocabulary before treating any app badge as absolute.
Ten Gods as relationship vocabulary
Once both Day Masters are known, translate key stems on each chart into Ten Gods relative to the other person where the method calls for it, or simply note which stars dominate each natal map. Common beginner lenses:
- Resource (印): care, teaching, shelter—or smothering if unbalanced.
- Output (食伤): expression, creativity, sharp speech, problem-solving style.
- Wealth (财): resources, attraction themes, practical priorities.
- Officer (官杀): rules, duty, protection, or pressure.
- Peer (比劫): sameness, loyalty, rivalry, shared appetites.
None of these stars are “good” or “bad” by default. A chart loud in Officer stars may thrive with clear agreements and struggle with vague expectations. Compatibility talk should name the pattern, then ask whether both people can work with it.

Timing: why a “perfect match” still has hard years
Luck Pillars (Da Yun) andannual luck (流年, liú nián) can emphasize different stars for each person. A pair that feels easy in a Resource-heavy decade may feel sharper when Officer or Peer weather arrives. Timing does not erase natal structure; it changes volume.
For self-study, compare: (1) natal Day Masters, (2) recurring Ten Gods themes, (3) current Da Yun for each person, (4) the shared year’s stem–branch. Keep conclusions provisional if birth times are uncertain—Hour pillars and some relationship layers need reliable clocks.
What to ignore in popular compatibility content
- Single percentage scores with no Day Master math.
- Year-animal-only match lists dressed up as Four Pillars.
- Fear headlines that treat every clash as breakup destiny.
- One-size lucky-color or crystal prescriptions sold as “Yong Shen fixes” for couples.
If you later study Useful God (用神, yòng shén), treat it as a balance concept for a natal chart—not a shopping list that automatically solves relationship friction.

FAQ
Is there a single BaZi compatibility score?
No trustworthy educational reading reduces two charts to one percentage. Day Master pairs, branch combinations/clashes, Ten Gods themes, and luck timing all interact. Score widgets are marketing, not methodology.
What should I compare first between two charts?
Start with both Day Masters and their elemental relationship, then Day branches, then how each person’s Wealth, Officer, Resource, Output, and Peer stars show up toward the other. Keep Month season in view.
Does same zodiac animal mean good compatibility?
No. Sharing a Year branch animal still leaves Month, Day, and Hour free to differ. Four Pillars compatibility looks past the animal headline.
Can Ten Gods describe relationship roles?
Yes, as vocabulary. For example, Officer themes can feel like structure or pressure; Resource themes can feel like care or dependency. Labels describe dynamics, not moral verdicts.
Do Luck Pillars change compatibility?
Timing layers can emphasize different stars for each person across decades and years. Natal structure still matters; annual and Da Yun weather can change which themes feel loud.
Where do I get both charts calculated?
This site does not run a compatibility engine. Generate each person’s pillars in the BaZi apps, then use these guides to reason about Day Master and Ten Gods dynamics.
